DEARBORN, MI (Dec. 2006) -- What would YOU do to get your hands on a Carroll Shelby-autographed GT500 die cast model car just in time for the holidays? All our five winners had to do was log onto www.svt.ford.com between November 6th and 26th, answer three Shelby GT500 Trivia Challenge questions, and sit back and wait for their entry to be picked. If that sounds easy - well, it was for the following folks who now have a limited-edition die-cast coming their way:
Congratulations are in order for Ernest McGowen of Spring, Texas; Bruce Remai of Traverse City, Michigan; Adam Kienast of Rapid City, South Dakota; Melissa Black of Easley, South Carolina; and Victor Garcia of Plantation, Florida. These lucky Shelby GT500 fans correctly answered all three Trivia Challenge questions and were selected, at random, to receive one of the five collectable die-cast 1:18-scale models autographed by Carroll Shelby.
Although many of the thousands of people who entered our Shelby GT500 Trivia Challenge got the questions right, here are the answers for those of you who were pretty much guessing the whole way through: The first model year for the Shelby GT500 was 1967. If you guessed 1965 or 1966, you were probably thinking of the GT500's racy little brother, the Shelby GT350. Thanks of the most collectable muscle cars ever produced.
Why did Carroll Shelby choose the name GT500 for his big-block Mustang muscle car? No, it wasn't because of the horsepower. Unlike the 2007 Shelby GT500 with 500hp, the '67 was rated at 335hp. Shelby said he chose the "500" moniker because that number was higher than any other number being used by a manufacturer as a model name for their top performance car (i.e. 396, 421, 426, 427, 440, 442, etc.). Shelby's top 'Stang was built to outclass all competition, and the "500" name was intended to reflect that prowess.
The last question proved to be a bit trickier than the others. It asked, "What major component does the 2007 Shelby GT500 share with the Ford GT?" The correct answer is the cylinder heads, which are identical to those used on the 2005-06 Ford GT supercars. (The answer is actually revealed in the "Performance" section of this website!). And while we will admit that the rear diffuser is functional and inspired by the GT, it is built to its own specifications for the GT500.
If you weren't one of our lucky winners this time around, no need to worry! We're planning more fun-filled challenges with more exciting Shelby GT500 prizes for the coming months. Just keep checking www.svt.ford.com, and do it often -- because like the Shelby GT500, these contests go by really fast!
Note: If you had your heart set on a Shelby GT500 die-cast, you can still buy one from The Ford Collection. (You'll have to get your own autograph, of course.) Click here for ordering info: Ford Collection
